How To Write A Successful Essay For College

One of the main reasons so many students loathe writing essays is because they are often disinterested in the topic. If you’ve received an essay assignment where the topic has been chosen for you, you may tend to write it begrudgingly, which will be detrimental to the quality of your paper.

Despite the topic, here is a way to write an essay to make it look like you’ve taken on your passion in doing so.

A day in the life

Try to convince yourself that you only have to immerse yourself in the topic for one day. Use that day and become a person who is interested in the topic, no matter how boring you usually find it. Do this by exercising the following:

  • Talk to people about the topic; especially those who are also interested in it. Convince them that you find it interesting too
  • Read commentaries and articles about people who are passionate about the topic
  • Learn about people that were or are in the community of a society who live/d and breath/ed this topic

You must genuinely act out an interest for the topic to yourself and almost convince yourself that you find it fascinating.

Turn it into an opinion

Take the topic and discover your own opinion about it. Your professor will appreciate your insight into the subject. If your topic is about the history of King Richard and you find it boring, write about your own view on the crusades or some other aspect of his life that you want to highlight from your own perspective.

Add some humour

A good way to spice up an essay for yourself is to add a little humour to it. Be careful not to over trivialize the topic, but lightening it up slightly can’t hurt. If your essay happens to be on a Shakespeare play, add some funny commentaries or hypothetical theories. The comedy makes the essay more fun to write, and in turn, more fun to read.

Don’t throw away your rejects

If you’re the type of person to start an essay and crumple it up if you’re not happy, STOP! Feel free to restart your essay, but don’t throw away your rejects. Instead, grab a highlighter and mark all the aspects of your rejected essay that could actually work. Try to incorporate the successful features into your new attempt. If you end up rejecting ten papers, that’s a lot of useful material you may still be able to use.

Structured Content and Logic Presentation

Each of essay sections should be well defined and written clearly. This means you should know what details to include while minimizing the amount needed. You may need to rewrite each section more than once before settling on your final copy. You should also remember to proofread, edit, and revise as these elements help make your structure more solid. Think about your details in how you want readers to view it from your perspective.
