Frankenstein is a book that is written in the form of a series of letters from the captain of a ship to his sister. The captain is Robert Walton and he is on a ship bound for the North Pole while his sister remains in England. He sends her letters to keep her apprise to the progress of his otherwise dangerous mission. The mission is successful initially but soon becomes interrupted by seas of impassable ice. As Walter remains trapped, he encounters a man being carried by dog sled by the name of Victor Frankenstein. Walton brings this man aboard his ship and nurses him back to health. During this time he hears all about the tale of the monster that was created by Frankenstein.

Victor starts by describing his life in Geneva and his blissful childhood. He began studies in philosophy and chemistry at the university where he spent years researching the secret of life, until he believes he has finally found it. Victor then dedicates months to fashioning a creature from old body parts using this knowledge. Finally, he is able to bring the creation to life. But after it comes to life he is horrified at what he has created. He tries to sleep fitfully but is interrupted by the monster looming over him. The monster runs away and this leaves Victor in a feverish illness. He is sickened by what he did and tries to return to Geneva.

Instead, he receives a letter that his younger brother was murdered. As he hurries home he sees the monster in the woods and believes he was responsible for his brother’s murder. Soon Victor learns that a gentle girl was accused, condemned, and executed for the murder and the weight of creating a monster responsible for the death of two innocent people grows. While on vacation, the monster finds him and admits he murdered his brother in an attempt to get back at his cruel creator. He begs for Victor to make an equally grotesque mate for him. He does, but then begins to doubt whether his actions were moral. He sees the monster watching the creation from outside of the window and in a moment of horror, he destroys it, causing the monster to swear he will seek revenge on Victor’s wedding night. The monster kills his bride on the wedding night, as he predicted.

Victor is able to track the monster north through the ice and with his dog sled is almost able to catch him, until the sea beneath swelled and broke the ice, leaving a gap that he could not pass. It was at this time that Walton found Victor.
